Report on the 2030 CO₂ footprint targets and renewable energy

Reading time: about 9 minutesLast updated: 2 February 2026

The world is changing and natural resources are running out. Step by step, the Netherlands is moving towards clean energy. This dossier collects public information, policy goals and scientific insights to support the protection of our landscape for future generations.

Global warming

Global warming

Average global temperatures have been rising for several decades. Scientific institutes such as KNMI and the IPCC confirm that human activity plays an important role in this development. For low-lying countries like the Netherlands, this means an immediate need to protect coastlines, dunes and polders.

The Dutch government has set goals in its Climate Agreement: a 55 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. These goals require education, cooperation and the steady development of cleaner technologies across every sector of society.

The role of the Netherlands in green energy

The role of the Netherlands in green energy

Dutch energy companies, research institutes and municipalities work on a broad package of solutions: solar parks on former industrial sites, offshore wind farms in the North Sea and district heating networks in urban areas. This development requires public engagement and transparent information.

By working with universities, local communities and non-profit organisations, the Netherlands is building a network of renewable sources. Protection of nature comes first: new projects are reviewed against strict environmental standards and the support of local residents.

The future of agriculture

The future of agriculture

Dutch agriculture — Agriculture 5.0 — combines knowledge from Wageningen, sensors in the soil and circular methods. With precision techniques, growers can use water and fertilisers more efficiently, which benefits the protection of the environment.

Vertical farming, heat recovery and regenerative techniques show that a healthy future for our children is possible. The educational mission of Fundonvero is to make this knowledge accessible to anyone who wants to contribute to a green Netherlands.

Development, future and protection go hand in hand. By learning and sharing together, we strengthen support for a sustainable Netherlands.
